Personal Statement

My career has been focused in the Humanities and Technology. It has been my goal to synthesize these areas to offer a broader and more complete range of communication. As an educator I have incorporated this experience into my curriculum to provide the student with a most open and comprehensive learning platform.

In the Humanities my emphasis is the inter-discipline of various cultures. My special interest is in German, Hispanic, and Japanese cultures. While serving in the US Navy I was stationed in Japan and made it my mission to learn the art and language of Japan. This knowledge proved useful in the publication of the USS Midway's Cruise Book of which I was the ship's Chief Editor and Artist.

In Art and Literature Spain, Latin-America, Germany, and Japan have been most influential. In my studies and travels I have learned all three languages. Reading the original works of Nietzsche, Hegel, and Cervantes adds to their meaning and importance. An ardent student of Philosophy and History all my life, my knowledge of German has served as an important tool of research in these areas as well as in Art History. Similarly, studying the works of such Hispanic authors as Manuel Rojas, Emilia Pardo Bazan, and Juan Rulfo in Spanish add insight and understanding to what they are writing. This ability and knowledge firmly enhances any Humanities program and course development.

As a professional artist I have produced work in Fine Art, Architecture, and Engineering. My studio work includes oil painting, drawing, portraiture, landscape, photography, ceramics, silver point, design, pen & ink illustration, water color, and computer graphics (using both Macintosh and PC platforms). In the fields Architecture and Engineering I am recognized as a prominent technical illustrator and designer. I have designed homes and done the complete working drawings on AutoCAD software. My work in this area has been closely aligned with state-of-the-art computer technology.

In Technology I am fluid with both networking Local Area Networks (LAN) and network protocols (TCP/IP, NetBEUI). I am familiar with both Windows and UNIX operating systems. Further, I have extensive knowledge of Windows applications such as Microsoft Office, Netscape, Quicken, and Adobe Illustrator/PhotoShop. Website Design has been a special focus for me with the pervasive influent of Internet marketing and communication.  In my studio I operate with DSL interface thus giving me digital flexibility in utilizing the Internet, File Transfers (FTP), and Video Conferencing. The use of current technology in the area of Art and the Humanities has tremendous potential in global communications and research. With the world growing smaller every day it is imperative that we harness this technology for the betterment of all people.
